Inish Grass Division Two Final

Carn Res 3

Cockhill Res 2

Carn Res  completed a hat trick of trophies this season when they added the Division Two Shield to their league and Fr O Gara Cup successes.

But  they had to do it the hard way as they overturned a two goal deficit and Cockhill will rue a missed penalty in the first half. Cockhill began well and opened the scoring in the second minute after Mason McDaid floated a free kick to the back post where Bernard Gubbins header crept in at the angle of the post and bar. They went close again in the fifteenth minute after a PJ Doherty corner fell to Gubbins at the back post and his effort was cleared off the line by Josh Diver. Carn responded with Cormac McLaughlin feeding Dayton Cooke who fired high and wide  from twenty yards.  But Cockhill doubled their lead on 27   minutes when a long free was punched out by McDaid  to the edge of the area where Kieran McElroy superbly volleyed to the unguarded net. But Carn got a crucial goal back within a minute when Dayton Cooke poked the ball into the area where it came off a defender to Mark Scott who controlled and fired a superb shot on the turn across Darragh O Donnell and into the bottom left hand corner. Carn upped the tempo then with McLaughlin s effort easily gathered by keeper O Donell who then saw his bass intercepted by Cooke but Mason McDaid recovered superbly to turn the ball behind for a corner. On the stroke  of half time Cockhill were awarded a penalty after Shane McLaughlin was deemed to be upended but Mason McDaids powerful spot kick was brilliantly saved  by Daniel McDaid diving low to his left with the keeper getting a strong hand to divert the ball behind. Carn dominated the second half and a superb through ball from Tiernan Doherty sent Shay Fallon clear but his effort was superbly saved by the outstretched foot of  O Donnell. But within a minute they were level after another superb pass from Cooke who lifted the ball over the Cockhill defence for Cormac McLaughlin to slot low past O’Donnell. Another superb flick from Cooke released McLaughlin again but Gubbins got back to clear the danger. Cockhill finally exerted pressure on the Carn defence and were unlucky in the 83rd minute after a PJ Doherty cross from the left found Marc Doherty whose header crashed off the bar and Sean  Bradley was unable to force the loose ball home. With extra time looming Carn were awarded a free kick on the edge of the area and for the second time this season Mark Scott stepped up and drilled the ball to the top left hand corner to clinch the treble for Daniel Dohertys side.

Man Of The Match

Darragh O Donnell, Bernard Gubbins and Marc Doherty all had very good games for the runners up while Ciaran O Kane, Tiernan Doherty and Dayton Cooke were prominent for Carn. But goals win games and the award goes to Mark Scott who scored to sublime goals and was a constant threat to the Cockhill defence.
