Donegal League 1

Trailing three two from the first leg Inishowen knew that nothing less than victory would suffice when they entertained the Donegal league at Maginn Park on Saturday in difficult conditions. Inishowen began on the front foot and a long free kick delivery found Odhran O’Brien-Daly but he headed over. Donegal responded and a lovely Eddie O’Reilly ball over the top released Patrick Carr  whose attempted lob weas punched clear by Taylor Clarke.

With the wind Inishowen had a number of set piece opportunities to pressure the Donegal rearguard and from the first of these from Damien Duffy from the right hand the side ball just eluded O’Brien-Daly coming in at the back post. But successive deliveries from Duffy, Luke Rudden and Lee McColgan all sailed over the bar as the half ended scoreless. The second half began with  a Donegal free kick from Seamie Friel which found the head of Carr but Clarke turned his header around the post. At the other end Donegal keeper Michael Lynch failed to hold a Lee McColgan free into the area but Brendan  McCafferty was on hand to clear the danger. The decisive moment of the second leg arrived on 66 minutes after a long free saw Carrs superb header crash off the bar for the unmarked O’Reilly to slot home. Donegal spurned a gilt edged opportunity to double their lead on 75 minutes after a superb move which began with Gareth Harkin evading a couple of tackles before feeding Shane McGinty inside the area who laid it on a plate for Ronan McHugh at the back post but he somehow fired over a gaping goal. The home side tried desperately to get back into the game but failed to penetrate the visitors defence with Donegal advancing to the semi finals .
