FAI Senior Cup Last Sixteen

Glengad United                 0

Waterford FC                      2

Glengad United’s fairytale in the FAI Senior cup came to an end when they were defeated by Premier Division Waterford in a hard fought game on a superb surface in front of a big crowd.

An early defensive error allowed Georgie Poynton a clear shot from the edge of the area  but John G McLaughlin made a tremendous block. With Glengad defending deep Cory Galvin , who was superb throughout , fed Michael O’Connor ( on loan from Linfield) and he turned but saw his effort well saved by Kevin McLaughlin. Then a deep cross from the left by Kevin Lynch found the overlapping Rory Feeney but from a tight angle he fired into the side netting. Glengad had a decent spell then with John g McLauhlin breaking forward and finding Christy McLaughlin on the left and he cut inside but fired wide. Minutes later a good pass from Seamus Doherty again to McLaughlin on the left but his cross was hacked clear by a defender. Glengad s best chance came then after a good run from Stephen McLaughlin saw hi slip the ball to Terence Doherty on the edge of the area but he scooped the ball high and wide. Waterford upped the tempo and Gavin found space inside the area to unleash a shot which deflected off Seamus Doherty and hit the inside of the post before rebounding into McLaughlin’s arms. Before the break a powerful Sam Bone shot was superbly tipped onto the bar and over by McLaughlin as the half ended scoreless. Waterford upped the tempo again on the restart with O’Connor firing over , Gavin seeing a shot well parried by McLaughlin and O’Connor pulling the ball back from the endline to Poynton whose effort was beaten away by McLaughlin. Waterford created a clear chance on 61 minutes following a Galvin corner which Shane Duggan headed across goal and wide. The pressure told on 69 minutes  after Kevin Lynch’s played a short free to Shane Duggan whose shot crashed off the wall and a poor defensive header fell to O’Connor to slot the ball across McLaughlin and inside the far post from twelve yards. Glengad tried to respond and a good burst from Stephen McLaughlin saw him find Terence Doherty whose powerful shot was well held by Matthew Connor. Waterford sealed the tie on 85 minutes after Poynton intercepted in midfield and released Galvin who fired a low shot to the bottom left hand corner from sixteen yards past McLaughlin. Glengad did rally and John G McLaughlin saw a header cleared off the line before substitute Conor Barrow failed to connect properly and Connor saved.  Waterford saw the game out in the four minutes of injury time to advance to the quarter finals but Glengad can be proud of their brilliant run to become the first inishowen league team to get to this stage.
