Jackie Crossan Premier Division
Clonmany Shamrocks 1
Cockhill Celtic 2
This top of the table clash was well contested and in the opening half both sides had chances to grab the lead. Cockhill had the first opportunity after an intereption in midfield saw the ball played through to Corey McBride on the right hand side of the area but his goal bound effort was deflected over by a superb tackle from Gareth Bradley. Clonmany replied with Matthew Brennan feeding Terence Doherty who cut in from the left and when he unleashed an early shot it deflected off a defender wrong footing Harry Doherty but the ball trickled past the post.
At the other end Conor Graham surged into the area but was denied by a combination of Bradley and goalkeeper Jonathan Noone before Noone recovered to divert his follow up behind for a corner. On the stroke of half time Clonmany had another chance following Jack Doherty’s corner which was recycled by Brennan at the back post to Aaron Porter and his left footed cross was headed just wide by Terence Doherty as the half ended scoreless. Cockhill made the break through five minutes after the restart when a Lee McLaughlin cross come shot from the right was clawed away by Noone but Garbhan Friel was on hand to slot the ball home. Clonmany responded and Jack Doherty was narrowly off target with a well struck free kick. The visitors then struck for the killer second goal on 70 minutes when McBride was left in acres of space on the right hand side of the area to drill a low shot pas the unsighted Noone. The home side rallied and set up a grandstand finish on 87 minutes substitute Pearse McCarron looped a ball across to the back post for Terence Doherty to head home. Clonmany pressed in the closing minutes but the visitors defence stood firm to claim a crucial victory.
Aileach FC 0
Buncrana Hearts 2
Buncrana started the game better and had the home defence under pressure from some set pieces which ultimately they survived. Aileach gradually began to get a foot hold with Gavin Bradley causing problems down the left. On 20minutes the home side carved out an opportunity when PJ Miller found Bradley outside the box but his powerful drive just cleared Taylor Clarkes bar. Midway through the half Buncrana grabbed the lead their pressure deserved when Liam Jordan got to the bye line on the right and pulled the ball back for Jack Bradley to sweep home from 8 yards past Eoin Callaghan. Aileach huffed and puffed for the remainder of the half without creating anything clear cut. The home side began the second half a bit brighter and on 55minutes following a corner from the right Gavin Doherty got his head to the ball but his effort flew wide of Clarkes left hand post. Buncrana were always dangerous from set pieces and following a free kick wide on the left the ball bobbled around the box and but for a last ditch block by Darren Gallagher, Caolan Doherty would have stretched the visitors lead. With 20 minutes left Buncrana did double their lead after a long through ball was latched onto by Liam Jordan and while Callaghan did brilliantly to block his initial effort the rebound fell kindly and he was able to tap home from close range. Try as they might Aileach could not find a way back into the game and Buncrana ran out comfortable winners.

This match was played on Tuesday night in bitterly cold conditions and with a biting wind. The Reserves created early openings when Gareth McKeever’s well struck shot was beaten away at the near post by Sam Coyle and then John Gerard Doherty had a long range effort that dipped just over. The First team then fashioned an opening after Patrick Doherty (S) latched onto a through ball but Roger McGilloway advanced out to near the edge of the box to claim. Shea Grant then tried his luck with two attempts – his first travelled wide of the right hand post while McGilloway palmed away his second at the expense of a corner. The First team were enjoying the lion’s share of possession and carved out more chances. Jake O’Donnell had a close range shot blocked by the keeper; the same player just failed to connect with a Doherty cross and when O’Donnell delivered a delightful angled ball into the box Ronan McConologue cleared with a forward ready to pounce. In the opening minutes of the second half John Gerard Doherty set up namesake Keelan on the 18 yard line but his hurried shot went over. At the other end, a quickly taken free from midfield sent Grant clear of the defence but he was forced wide with McGilloway dispensing his shot from a tight angle for a corner. The First team broke the deadlock just past the hour mark. Ryan Doherty’ s corner from the right eluded everyone and dropped at the feet of Damien Friel at the back post and he drove high into the net. The Reserves should have equalised minutes later. McKeever got control and took the ball round Coyle but with the goal gaping he blasted over from right in front of the empty net. The First team doubled its lead mid way through the second half. Ryan Doherty had a long range effort palmed away by McGilloway allowing Patrick Doherty to control the ball and fire across the keeper to the far corner. McKeever then had a further gilt edged opportunity to score for the Reserves but after being set up by John Gerard Doherty he completely fluffed the chance by miskicking when about to pull the trigger. When a left wing corner was looped back across goal Shane Cregan headed to the net for a third goal. Late on further attempts by First team subs failed to add to the scoreline when Adam Doherty found the side net and Oran McDevitt drilled wide of a post.
