Jackie Crossan Premier Division

QPS 5

Culdaff FC 1

This backlog game saw the home side burst out of the blocks and dominate the first half. They got a dream start in the third minute after a quality Ross Nicholas cross was converted at the back post by Danny McMenamin. They got a second goal on 20 minutes when Lee Barr headed home a deep cross  before another Nicholas cross was superbly finished by Darragh McIntyre to leave the home side three nil ahead at the interval. Culdaff started the second half well and  spurned a couple of good chances to get back into the contest. They paid the price for those misses when Barr advanced and unleashed a superb effort from thirty yards to the top corner to make it four nil. Owen Lynch then got the fifth when he ran onto a through ball from McIntyre before sliding it low to the net. The visitors got a consolation in the 81st minute after Keith Norris ran onto a long clearance before advancing into the area and drilling low to the corner.

Rearranged for  Thursday evening in Caratra after being postponed last Sunday this was an entertaining game which the home side edged. The home side got off to a dream start in the third minute after Jack O’Brien dispossessed a defender and squared the ball for Billy Hume to slot past Josh Caldwell from six yards. The visitors then had a great chance to equalise when John Doherty burst clear but failed to hit the target with only keeper Thomas O’Brien to beat. Culdaff responded  and the pace  of Hume saw him break clear but Caldwell made a superb save to deny him. The visitors then got back on terms when Luke McFadden raced onto a ball over the top and advanced unopposed into the area to drill low past O’Brien from sixteen yards. The home side then regained the lead on the half hour as a brilliant pass from O’Brien released Hume and he converted from six yards. Culdaff created a few good chances but wayward finishing and good goalkeeping kept them at bay until the stroke of half time. Cathal McGrenaghan fed O’Brien who again sent Hume clear and this time he finished well from twelve yards to complete his hat trick. Greencastle began the second half well with an Aaron Price free kick headed wide by Eunan Hegarty. They got right back in the game on the hour mark after McFadden found space in the middle of the home defence to shoot low past O’Brien from fourteen yards. A superb point blank save then from O’Brien to deny McFadden his hat trick kept the home side ahead.  Culdaff regained control of the game after this and substitute Jack Mills saw a header saved by Caldwell before a long range effort from O’Brien drifted wide of the mark. The home side spurned another couple of good opportunities but saw the game out to claim the points.
